On Monday January 24th a small group of us headed to the Mbyea region of Tanzania near the borders with Zambia and Malawi.
Theo is taking part in the Cocoa Quality and Market Access Program developed by
TechnoServe and Irish Aid. The eastern expanse of Tanzania is a rich
agricultural region where cocoa farmers are significantly improving their
incomes through post harvest process and subsequent quality improvement. Theo
will play a role by providing in-depth technical expertise on fermenting and
drying and by providing a significant commercial incentive for select
communities who ultimately meet Theo's quality
standards.
"We're committed to working with Tanzanian farmers in order to support Jane's legacy and as a critical aspect of Theo's partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute. The opportunity to spend time with the farmers themselves on their cacao farms in order to gain a more direct understanding of the challenges they face in improving quality is not only irreplaceable, it's imperative." Debra Music, VP Sales and Marketing.
Theo is drawn to Tanzania for two reasons, the unique quality potential of their cocoa and Jane Goodall's legacy. Dr. Goodall began her work on the eastern boarder of Tanzania in what is now the Gombe Stream National Park.
